University President Speaks on Morgan State Being an Anchor Institution, Significance of HBCUs

Expanding Footprints and Seeking New Markets
Some HBCU leaders are considering building satellite campuses to expand their reach and serve more Black students. Morgan State University got approval earlier this month to purchase a 59-acre property, a mile away from Morgan State’s main campus in East Baltimore, formerly the site of Lake Clifton High School.

The Johns Hopkins University has a research park just north of its East Baltimore medical campus. The University of Maryland has a “biopark” west of its downtown Baltimore campus. Now the former Lake Clifton High School property will become a research-oriented “innovation park” and satellite campus for Morgan State University, president David Wilson told Baltimore’s Board of Estimates Wednesday.

Baltimore’s Board of Estimates on Wednesday approved Morgan State University’s purchase of several land parcels including the former Lake Clifton High School where officials hope to build the university’s first modern satellite campus. Morgan State officials pledged spending $200 million to convert three city-owned parcels of land into a new campus about a mile south of the university’s main campus that would expand its footprint in East Baltimore.
Baltimore City Set to Sell Lake Clifton High School Property to Morgan State University
The Baltimore City Department of Real Estate has announced a new Land Disposition Agreement (LDA) with Morgan State University, which has agreed to purchase the former Lake Clifton High School property in East Baltimore. The university has long-term plans to develop a new satellite campus on the site.
